Fees

A new baby brings more than enough to think about. Medicare, private health cover and newborn billing can be genuinely confusing, and the first weeks at home are busy and tender. So we’ve set things up to take that off your plate.

We take care of it for you

Rather than leaving you with a large bill to sort out with Medicare and your health fund, we guide you through each step:

Clear costs before the birth. You’ll receive a personal estimate during pregnancy, and what you pay is capped, whatever your circumstances.

Nothing to pay in hospital. We send the invoice after you go home, and don’t take payment until around 6 weeks.

Help getting your baby onto Medicare. We’ll walk you through registering your baby and linking your family, so you receive every rebate you’re entitled to.

We claim for you. We lodge your Medicare claim the moment you pay, so the rebate is usually back in your account within a few days. If your baby needs the nursery, we bill your health fund directly.

Our fees and what you’ll pay

Our fees reflect specialist neonatologist-led care, from pregnancy and birth through to follow-up at home. At the same time, we keep what families pay capped and predictable, because we believe being clear about costs is part of caring for you well.

Why most families pay so little. Every family we care for has their pregnancy care with the obstetricians at Grace Private. For most, those costs take the family past Medicare’s Safety Net threshold for the year – and from then on, Medicare pays back much more for each visit.

Known costs for every family. If Medicare pays back less for your family, or your baby doesn’t have Medicare, we simply reduce our fees so you never pay more than the amounts in the Never More Than column. We’ll confirm your fees in your estimate before the birth, and check in with you again before we invoice.

Why hospital care is a range. Our fee for the hospital stay is the same for every baby, but what Medicare pays back depends on when your baby is seen and by which of our clinicians. So what you pay falls somewhere in the range shown, and never above $740.

A new year. Medicare’s higher rebates reset on 1 January, so a consult early in a new year may cost more, up to $275. We’ll always let you know beforehand.

Twins. Double the joy shouldn’t mean double the cost. We bulk-bill your second baby’s care in full, in hospital and in clinic, so you pay for one baby only.
